The Accu-Chek® Aviva Expert system – at a glance
Accu-Chek Aviva Expert – what is it about?
The Accu-Chek Aviva Expert system is much more than a blood glucose meter.
It is an innovative, clinically-proven blood glucose monitoring system and supports
diabetes self-management of MDI (multiple daily injection or intensified insulin-
treated patients): It offers the embedded proven Accu-Chek Bolus Advisor for easy
and reliable bolus calculation.
- It presents meal and correction insulin bolus recommendations based upon
- Current blood glucose (bG) value
- Planned carbohydrate (CHO) intake
- Patient-specific therapy parameters (e.g. individual insulin-to-carb ratio or insulin sensitivity factor)
- Recommends amount of CHO intake (meal or snack size) and/or a reduced insulin dose if the blood glucose level is in a pre-defined hypoglycemic range
In addition, the Accu-Chek Aviva Expert system stores key patient information and therapy parameters, blood glucose values and test averages for 7, 14, 30, 60 and 90 days, insulin delivery information, user-selected health event flags and CHO information in an electronic diary. Via the information management functionalities of the system, users can have a look at average graphs and easy-to-understand charts on-the-go supporting them in determining the appropriate therapy adaptation when needed in their everyday life.
How can the Accu-Chek Aviva Expert system be used?
A key benefit of the Accu-Chek Aviva Expert blood glucose meter is its ease-of-use. To receive bolus advice, there are three basic steps: 1) test you blood glucose level, 2) enter carbohydrate estimate and 3) receive bolus advice.
The meter also allows for additional, optional input to further customize the bolus advice and to enhance the information captured in the data diary. These additional input parameters are
- the meal flag (pre-meal, post-meal, bedtime, other), and
- a pre-defined health event to allow for a percentage adjustment of the bolus advice based on activities or health status.
If a patient wants to re-test after a certain time and check if the bolus dose was sufficient there are a range of programmable alarms and reminders to support him.
How does the Accu-Chek Aviva Expert system contribute to improved diabetes management?
For optimal diabetes management according to latest therapy guidelines patients and physicians alike are highly dependent on accurate and detailed information. The evaluation of individual glucose profiles and in particular of post-meal values has shown to be important in determining therapeutic adjustments, since postprandial hyperglycemia can be an independent cardiovascular risk factor. In addition, latest study results have shown the automated Bolus Advisor to safely improve glycemic control with increased time within target range1,2,3 while at the same time not increasing hypoglycemia and reducing the participants’ fear of hypoglycemia. This in turn resulted not only in improved therapy outcomes but also in increased patients’ confidence in bolus administration and therapy satisfaction6.
