Altargo®(retapamulin 1%w/w) is a topical antibiotic for the short term treatment of the following superficial skin infections in adults, adolescents, infants and children (from 9 months of age.)
Impetigo1
Infected small lacerations, abrasions or sutured wounds1.
A thin layer of ointment should be applied to the affected area twice daily for five days1.
Altargo has a novel mechanism of action: low rates of cross-resistance with other classes of antibacterial agents1,4,5
No development of resistance was observed during treatment with Altargo1
Altargo selectively inhibits bacterial protein synthesis1
Prevents normal 50S ribosomal formation
Inhibits peptidyl transfer
Partially blocks P-site interactions
Altargo requires ~50% fewer applications per course of therapy vs fusidic acid1,2,3*
