Dr Gauden Galea, Director of Noncommunicable Diseases and Promoting Health through the Life-Course in the WHO Regional Office for Europe, talks to us about the response to the epidemic of NCDs in the fifty-three countries of this Region.

He describes the trends in premature mortality from NCDs which are declining across the whole of Europe even as major differences persist between countries in the West, Centre, and East of the region. He emphasises the importance of keeping a balanced approach between population-based approaches and clinical prevention, both having a key role in reducing the burden. He introduces a [WHO publication on evidence-based “best buys”](http://www.who.int/ncds/management/be…) for the prevention and control of NCDs, which the members of TheSYNAPSE may use to draw inspiration for both their clinical work and their advocacy.
